\"\"Satoshi Fujiwara<\/strong><\/a>, born\u00a030<\/strong> years ago in Kobe<\/strong>,\u00a0started his career as photographer in 2012<\/strong> when he quit his job in Japan<\/strong> and decided to move to Berlin<\/strong>. About his previous work experience in Japan<\/strong>, Satoshi says:\u00a0\u201cI worked for a Japanese design company for five years, and everybody kept on telling me that I was totally useless! So I decided to drop everything to pursue my dream: photography. I chose Berlin because my favorite photographers are two Germans: Thomas Ruff and Thomas Demand.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Today it is clear that the decision paid of –\u00a0it is only five years since he left Japan but\u00a0his work has already achieved international recognition thanks to a portfolio of several\u00a0\u00a0prestigious collaborations, beginning with a portrait t-shirt collection for\u00a0Issey\u00a0Miyake<\/strong>, and followed by a sensational add campaign for Deutsche\u00a0Opera\u00a0Berlin<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in 2016<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

When asked what his final aim as a photographer is, Satoshi replies:\u00a0“I\u00a0want to create a new aesthetic. Unlike fine art, photography has a short history,\u00a0however it has lots of specific\u00a0codes that\u00a0often\u00a0influence many contemporary photographers. I want to feel free from and break these schemes; I want to ‘squeeze’ the images, crush them, manipulate them and confer them with violence,\u00a0their visual force”.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Satoshi’s style is therefore extremely peculiar because he takes distances from\u00a0contemporary documentary photography aiming\u00a0to create a new language, capable\u00a0of shifting\u00a0the observer’s\u00a0point of view.\"\"<\/p>\n

In his photo series, called “Code Unknown”<\/strong>, for example, Satoshi took numerous portraits\u00a0of Berliners traveling on the train. He shot portraits of Berlin<\/strong> subway passengers without their knowledge justifying\u00a0this act by claiming the work to be a commentary on portraiture.\u00a0In order\u00a0to publish pictures\u00a0without\u00a0rights issues, Satoshi usually edits\u00a0them by using digital post-production processes like\u00a0cropping and reframing\u00a0until the pictures\u00a0reach the limit of recognizability.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Taken out of context, his photos convey a jarring and\u00a0strong image, and\u00a0it\u00a0is almost impossible for the viewer to figure out where and when they were taken.\u00a0Satoshi’s signature close-ups make\u00a0the images\u00a0practically unrecognizable, depriving them of the possibility for\u00a0storytelling.<\/p>\n

Satoshi says “I understood that by changing the context, I can also change the meaning of the image. So I decided to divide\u00a0my photo series into sections and create\u00a0other content. I have done many series\u00a0and they are all being exhibited\u00a0in\u00a0Milan until mid-October. ”<\/p>\n

The exhibition – called “EU”<\/strong> – is being held\u00a0at the\u00a0Observatory<\/strong> of\u00a0Galleria Vittorio Emanuele<\/strong>\u00a0by the Prada Foundation<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

The show is divided into two sections: on the lower floor there is and installation called “5K Confinement”<\/strong>, commissioned by the Prada Foundation<\/strong> in 2016<\/strong>. \u00a0This piece of art is part of a photographic reportage, called the\u00a0Cippini\u00a0Project, where the photographer uses different cameras – from smart phone ones to professional ones – in order to\u00a0analyze the stress experienced by people who know they are being\u00a0observed: a\u00a0topic of great relevance in contemporary Orwellian societies.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The second floor hosts a retrospective of his more recent photographic series, including “#R”<\/strong>, which is a deconstructionalist representation of the conflict between police and activists, and “THE FRIDAY: A report on a report”<\/strong> (2015). A meta-photographic reportage that immortalizes the horde of reporters who descended on Paris<\/strong> during the terror attacks there, as well as scenes from\u00a0amateur football matches, or from the sex fair in Berlin<\/strong>. In these various projects, Satoshi has dismantled the context to give new meaning to the images.<\/p>\n

\"\"The exhibition in Milan<\/strong> was designed by curator Luigi Alberto\u00a0Cippini<\/strong>, and is a sequence of snapshots without any linear narrative context, coupled with Fujiwara’s photographic material.<\/p>\n

The photography comes out of the classic two-dimensionality of the screen and the framed print, and appropriates large PVC sheets on which the shots have been reproduced.\u00a0Attached to the walls with industrial metallic fixtures, the canvas drapes down to the floor in an impressive manner \u2014 a\u00a0bold and original choice that plays a key role in the outstanding work of this provocative Japanese photographer.<\/p>\n
